Director Welcome & Farewell

Posted 5/28/2014 | GOTR

Dear friends and supporters,

As the Board of Directors of Girls on the Run of Eastern Iowa, we have the privilege of overseeing a life-changing program that uses the power of running to prepare girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. We value your participation, enthusiasm and support, and would like to keep you abreast of some important changes within our organization.

As some of you may know, Kathleen Cannon, our executive director, is relocating to the Twin Cities this summer. Under Kathleen’s leadership, we’ve transitioned from serving girls from a dozen schools as Girls on the Run of Johnson County to now serving girls from 30+ schools in 4 counties as Girls on the Run of Eastern Iowa. With her dedication, vision, and enthusiasm, we’ve awarded unprecedented levels of financial aid to underserved girls, we began hosting our annual LUNAFEST film festival event, we launched our SoleMates adult charity running program, we engaged in a strategic planning process with the Tippie School of Business, we hosted our first-ever Girls on the Run 5k in Cedar Rapids, and much more. As an organization, we would not be where we are today without Kathleen's brilliance, hard work and leadership. We wish her and her family all the best in Minnesota!

We are excited to announce that after a rigorous search process, we have named Esther Baker as the new executive director of Girls on the Run of Eastern Iowa. Esther comes to this position with a significant background in strategic communication, program management and public relations. Her consulting experience and passion for non-profit excellence, coupled with her grant-writing experience, will help Girls on the Run reach even more Iowa girls more effectively. Esther recently completed an MBA and has also worked at the University of Iowa as a Program Consultant at the College of Public Health, the Director of External Relations for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and Deputy Director of the Iowa Tobacco Research Center. We are delighted that she has accepted this position and look forward to the many opportunities ahead.

Today, we bid Kathleen a fond farewell and welcome Esther to our Girls on the Run family with a big “WOW” energy award in true Girls on the Run fashion. We invite each of you to deepen your connection to our important work in the coming year.

With gratitude,
